How Hypnotherapy Actually Works
The berserks--what was wrong with them?]
The terms berserk and going berserk reflect the violent and ferocious warriors and ruthless murderers of Scandinavia and Northern Europe, active from before the Viking age until the advent of Christianity. The main source on the phenomenon is the Old Norse literature, mainly the Icelandic sagas with their sober descriptive accounts of the berserks and their behaviour.
The berserks are frequently depicted as having had antisocial character traits; often as bullies who evince, by way of autosuggestion, an enormous and uncontrollable rage, slaughtering and killing. They felt no pain and hardly took in the environment they lived in. The fits were followed by exhaustion or sleep. Although the phenomenon waned completely by the advent of Christianity, it can hardly be discarded as just myth or folklore. Most likely it could be explained as a kind of dissociative reaction. The widespread idea of toadstool as causative agent is at best debatable. The conceptions of pre-Christian heathenism about the human mind are of importance to the understanding of suggestibility and capacity for trance reaction. The condition is considered a culture-bound syndrome. Comparisons are drawn to lycanthropy (werewolf madness), frequently considered an identical phenomenon. Clinically (i.e. historically) it was mainly something different, namely psychotic conditions.

Addictions are serious chronic brain diseases, which have biological, psychological, and social implications. They are powerful because they employ neurological processes required for learning and survival. However, they use these vital systems in a way that threatens the addict’s health, relationships, and may often end in criminal prosecution and jail time. So, to understand and treat this problem both the patient and the counselor must know how abuse is encoded, triggered, and reinforced.
Our brain participates in a two-level learning system. Generally, learning can be divided into...
Like eating-related addictions, those involving sexual urges stem from what is a normal and healthy part of life. However, once sexually-related behavior becomes less of a choice and more of an uncontrollable behavior, help is needed.
A man with a significant sexual addiction once came to see me. Apparently, his life had gotten so far out of control that his behavior patterns had ruined many otherwise successful relationships. Of course, this does not count the problems of participating in activities that were medically dangerous and even illegal. In his case, he was addicted to...
When looked at its most basic form, fear is a condition that all healthy individuals may experience. It is only when it becomes chronically out of control and unjustified by events in the environment, that it becomes problematic. Fear arises out of a person's survival instinct combined with the ability for the brain to stimulate and anticipate. It also may be due to recognition that an anticipated situation may not be handled by existing patterns of expectation. This causes the brain to go through what I call an adaptation phase. Of course, there is always the possibility that an individual...
